A conference with theme “On-site treatment of Hospital Waste in the context of the revised European Directive 91/271 on Urban Wastewater”, was held with great success by the Hellenic Mediterranean University and Medical Waste S.A. on Friday 07 July 2023 at the IBIS STYLES HERAKLION CENTRAL hotel in the scope of DIANYA project for the RESEARCH – CREATE – INNOVATE Action, funded by the European Union and National Fund Program.
Representatives of several institutions, companies, academic and research staff attended the conference. Greetings were addressed by the Rector of the Hellenic Mediterranean University, the Deputy Regional Governor in the field of Environment, President of Environment and Spatial Planning Committee of Region of Crete, Mr. Nikos Xylouris, and the Director of the Technical Service of the Venizelio General Hospital of Heraklion, Mr. Efstathios Gryparis.
Goal of the conference was to highlight the problems created by the presence of pharmaceutical substances in urban wastewater and the need arisen in recent years for the development and implementation of an integrated methodology for wastewater management. Results of DIANYA project were presented, among them a standard pilot hospital waste treatment system that was built and operated at the Venizelio General Hospital of Heraklion.
